James 1: 2-8
2 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. 4 But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. 6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.
When trouble comes your way what is the first thing you do? Well, according the scripture we are to “count it all joy.” Now that’s not the easiest thing to do. More than likely, your flesh and your emotions will not want to co-operate. But if you’ve been born from above, you’re equipped to do this. You can praise God right in the face of the trial and count it all joy.
As you are counting it all joy you can know that the testing of you faith is going to produce patience in your life. Then, by His grace you can let patience have its perfect work and you will be complete and lacking nothing.
Then the Holy Spirit says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.”
Is the Holy Spirit changing the subject here? Lack wisdom about what? About the trouble we are facing. We don’t have to go through our situation completely blind. We can get the wisdom of God concerning our situation. In fact, the Word tells us in Proverbs that wisdom is the principle thing. (Proverbs 4:7)
God is a God of wisdom. The Spirit of God is called the Spirit of Wisdom. The Word is called the Wisdom of God. A lot of failure in life is due to a lack of operating in wisdom. He told us to get wisdom. He wouldn’t tell me to get it if it wasn’t available to me. And since He said, “get it”, it means it’s not just going to fall on me. I have to go get it. Could we use some more wisdom? Yes.
So whatever trouble or trial you may be facing, there is wisdom concerning it. Go to His Word and find out what He has to say about your situation. Also, get quiet in prayer and listen. Allow Him to speak to you. I don’t mean you’ll hear an audible voice. Let’s look at what Jesus says about you being able to hear Him.
To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice; and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. And when he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. Yet they will by no means follow a stranger, but will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers. (John 10:3-5)
And other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice; and there will be one flock and one shepherd. (John 10:16) My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. (John 10:27) If Jesus said just once that we could hear Him that would be enough. But five times He speaks of His sheep hearing Him.
So get your Bible and get quiet before the Lord and ask for wisdom concerning your situation and He says He will give you the wisdom you need. But don’t go to Him doubting. Know that He loves you and longs to be involved in your life!
